Inverness deny Butcher approach

Inverness Caledonian Thistle have denied reports that manager Terry Butcher has agreed to take over at Hibernian.

Pat Fenlon resigned from his post at the Edinburgh outfit on Friday, after a Scottish League Cup defeat to city rivals Hearts.

Hibs currently sit seventh in the Scottish Premiership, seven points and five places behind Inverness, who are second to champions Celtic.

Butcher led his side to fourth last season, narrowly missing out on a place in the UEFA Europa League, while the Highland club also reached top spot in Scotland s top flight for the first time in their history this term, remaining at the summit for the first eight rounds of the campaign.

Butcher turned down a chance to manage English Championship side Barnsley last season, and Inverness hav…

Merseyside derby set to be a bit different this year

Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez will meet for the first time as respective bosses of Merseyside giants Liverpool and Everton this Saturday

This season’s first Merseyside derby of the season takes place on Saturday lunchtime and it could be rather different from derbies of recent seasons.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez and Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers both come from the same school of football philosophies.

Trailblazers

Everton boss Roberto Martinez blazed a trail at Swansea in installing possession based, passing football at the Welsh club in his stint at the club between 2007 and 2009.

Everybody at the Welsh club bought into the philosophy and the Swans still play a similar style under Danish boss Michael Laudrup.

Ironically, it w…

Menez set for Milan switch

Jeremy Menez looks set to join Milan from French champions Paris Saint-Germain, and has spoken of his excitement at the move.

The 27-year-old found playing time hard to come by in the French capital last season, starting just seven matches as PSG romped to a second straight Ligue 1 title.

The France international revealed in March that it was unlikely he would stay in Paris, and he now appears on the verge of moving to San Siro as Milan aim to rebuild after the appointment of Filippo Inzaghi as head coach.

It will be Menez s second stint in Serie A, after three years spent in the Italian capital with Roma between 2008 and 2011, and he will arrive as a free agent with his PSG contract set to expire.

I am very happy and I want to win as always, as I did with PSG, h…

BREAKING NEWS: Bernard joins Everton on four-year deal

Brazil winger Bernard has joined Everton on a four-year contract, the Premier League club have confirmed.

The 25-year-old moves to Goodison Park on a free transfer after his terms expired at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Bernard won three league championships and as many domestic cups over the course of five seasons with the Ukrainian giants.

Capped 14 times by Brazil, although not since playing in the 7-1 World Cup semi-final humiliation against Germany in 2014, Bernard cited Everton boss Marco Silva as a key factor in his decision to move to Merseyside.

Messi, Ronaldo and the full 30-man Ballon d´Or shortlist

The 30-man shortlist to win the 2016 Ballon d Or was revealed over the course of Monday, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both included.

After the Ballon d Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year awards merged in 2010 to become the FIFA Ballon d Or, that partnership came to an end this year, allowing both prizes to return to their original formats.

Messi was last year s Ballon d Or winner and Ronaldo is the odds-on favourite to pick up this year s crown, with Kaka s 2007 win the last time either of the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars did not emerge victorious.

The 30-man shortlist will be the only group of nominations announced and a final three will not emerge prior to the announcement of the winner.

Here is the final list of 30 players nominated…

Aloisi resigns as Brisbane Roar boss

John Aloisi has stepped down as head coach of A-League strugglers Brisbane Roar following four consecutive defeats.

Aloisi s resignation was announced on Friday, with the Roar second from bottom after just one win from nine matches this season.

The 42-year-old former Australia international joined the Roar in 2015 and led the three-time A-League champions to back-to-back semi-finals.

However, Brisbane have struggled in 2018-19 – last month s win over Melbourne City the only shining light on an otherwise poor campaign to date.

BRFC can today confirm that John Aloisi has stepped down as Head Coach and will leave the club, effective immediately:

Scoring 100th Serie A goal at Sampdoria was ´destiny´, says Icardi

Mauro Icardi said scoring his 100th Serie A goal against former side Sampdoria was his destiny after leading Inter s 5-0 rout with a haul of four.

Inter blew their hosts away on Sunday, with Ivan Perisic opening the scoring before Icardi took over.

The striker was given his first taste of senior football by Sampdoria before joining Inter for €6million in July 2013, where he has blossomed into one of Serie A s best attackers, as evidenced by his four-goal showing in Genoa.

His first on the day, a penalty, saw him take his tally to 100 in Serie A for the two sides, while his fourth moved him on to a century in all competitions for Inter.

And reaching such milestones against Sampdoria was fitting, Icardi thought.

I ve scored 100 goals in Serie A…

Pogba and Kante must bring momentum to France, says Desailly

Marcel Desailly has urged Paul Pogba and N Golo Kante to rediscover top form at club level in a bid to aid France s World Cup hopes.

Pogba has continued to lack consistency at Manchester United after returning to Old Trafford from Juventus in August 2016, and has even found himself left out of the starting XI by manager Jose Mourinho in recent weeks.

Kante, meanwhile, has not been at his best for Chelsea after two stellar seasons that saw him win the Premier League title with Leicester City and then the Blues.

Pogba offered a reminder of what he is capable of with an assist and a goal in France s 3-1 friendly win over Russia in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

And Desailly, a World Cup and European Championship winner with Les Bleus, knows how important it is fo…

Ten Hag straight down to work at Man Utd as club confirm Monday unveiling

Erik ten Hag is set to outline his Manchester United vision on Monday when he holds his first news conference as Red Devils boss.

The former Ajax head coach has secured an early release from his contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, allowing him to get down to work in his new post.

A busy summer lies ahead for Ten Hag, with a host of players set to leave Old Trafford after a wretched season for the club.

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard look set to depart, while doubts surround others, including Eric Bailly and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

A substantial clear-out is likely to be followed by a recruitment drive as Ten Hag looks to build a squad capable of putting up a greater challenge for a Champions League place.

Prediction: Mexico vs Canada

Best Odds: 21/20

Bookmaker:

Two nations who are looking to book their spot in the final of this year s Gold Cup, Mexico and Canada will face off at the NRG Stadium in the early hours of Friday morning.

Mexico

Starting with Mexico, while Gerardo Martino s men might have opened their quarter-finals contest against Honduras last week as a landslide pick, the defending Gold Cup champions really laid down another marker. Putting in a professional display at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale five days ago, The Tricolor picked up a routine 3-0 victory and the mood in their camp should be at a real high. Despite being disappointed to have eventually settled for a 0-0 stalemate against Trinidad and Tobago in a Group A contest on July 11th, that was just the most minor …
